CEMEX Alico Quarry receives Wildlife Habitat Council Conservation Certification

March 4, 2021

CEMEX USA announced today its Alico Quarry in Fort Myers, FL, has earned Conservation Certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), recognizing the operation’s ongoing commitment to biodiversity and conservation education.

WHC recognized Alico Quarry specifically for its voluntary Purple Martin Nesting Project, an initiative designed to provide supplemental nesting habitat for this bird species. Purple Martins have fewer natural nesting spaces available and rely on help from land stewards like the team at Alico Quarry where they installed a 12-room birdhouse to support a colony for nesting and fledging annually. In addition, CEMEX is exploring conservation and education alignments in the region to develop partnerships to help achieve greater results.

CEMEX’s Alico Quarry is scheduled to receive its Conservation Certification certificate at WHC’s 2021 Conservation Conference, June 8-9, 2021, in Baltimore, Maryland.

In addition to Conservation Certification, Alico Quarry was recently recognized by the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association (NSSGA) for its overall efforts in Environmental Excellence.

“At CEMEX, we take great pride in being good stewards for the environment, and we are committed to our pursuit of environmental excellence,” said Jeff Bobolts, CEMEX USA Regional President—Florida Region. “We are proud of the efforts of our employees at our Alico operation and how they continue to set high standards in sustainability and conservation.”

Recently, CEMEX overall was also honored with the most prestigious award presented annually by the Wildlife Habitat Council – the 2020 Corporate Conservation Leadership Award – which recognizes the company’s achievements in biodiversity conservation. CEMEX currently has 30 programs certified by WHC, which all began with the company’s first certifications achieved in Florida.
