The CEMEX Galveston Ready-Mix Plant is dedicated to being a good neighbor, and it shows: the plant has been awarded two industry honors this year for its efforts in public appearance and environmental excellence.
First, the Texas Aggregate & Concrete Association (TACA) named the facility “Best Plant” in its category for the 2016 TACA Public Appearance Awards.
Following that, the plant was recognized by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) with 2nd-place honors in the Central Region for the 2016 NRMCA Environmental Excellence Awards.
“The employee pride at the Galveston Ready-Mix Plant is evident in everything they do. The outstanding team efforts between the plant operations, maintenance and environmental teams with continuous improvement and environmental stewardship initiatives to achieve operational and environmental excellence are a prime example of engagement in our core values. With these awards and their collaborative efforts, they’ve demonstrated that they’re among the best plants in the U.S., and that’s something we can all be proud of here at CEMEX,” Scott Ducoff, CEMEX USA Texas-New Mexico Region President, said.
Plant Manager Jose Rodriguez credits the plant’s success to a hard-working team dedicated to continuous improvement.
“I’m very, very proud of my team. They did an excellent job working together to make improvements and maintain compliance, and they always strive to make our plant better. They strive for excellence, and they achieve it,” he said.
The Galveston Plant has installed and maintains water-management controls that include contour paving, a water weir system and a 60,000-gallon water-holding basin with a water-recycling system. The weir system is used to collect and clarify process water for recycling, which serves to minimize water discharges from the site and also to conserve water use from municipal sources. The water-management controls are best practices that are used at all the concrete batch plants in the CEMEX Texas & New Mexico Region.
Each of the team members beautified the grounds of the plant site by landscaping either side of the plant entrance with tropical and native plant vegetation and rocks; making an employee picnic area at the rear of the grounds, flanked by palm trees and other flowering bushes; creating rock landscapes in unused areas of the parking lot and planting a working garden, where the plant employees grow tomatoes, limes and jalapeno peppers.
The TACA awards are given each year to plants that go above and beyond to beautify their grounds, practice good land stewardship, and demonstrate a sound commitment to environmental protection and community relations.
The NRMCA awards are given annually to recognize companies that make outstanding contributions to protecting the environment, maintain sound management practices in their operations, surpass governmental compliance measures and demonstrate a commitment to environmental excellence through plant and staff investment.
