CEMEX illustrates sustainability commitment with Earth Day events throughout April

CEMEX Lytle Creek Quarry Weighmaster James Wilburt explains environmental benefits of pervious concrete at an event in Rialto, Ca.

CEMEX employees across the U.S. participated in environmentally-friendly events for Earth Day and throughout April, upholding the company’s long-standing commitments to sustainable practices and their neighboring communities.

CEMEX’s largest Earth Day event drew more than 1,000 visitors to Center Hill Mine in Sumter County, Fla.  The company and the Sumter County School District hosted the 11th Annual Earth Day Event on April 21, holding mine tours and fossil digs. Children also got closer looks at the large trucks used at the mine in the Touch-a-Truck area.  Thirty educational booths offered information about the environment and best sustainability practices.

In Knoxville, Tenn., our Ready Mix USA colleagues donated hundreds of milkweed seeds harvested from monarch butterfly gardens at surrounding plants to The King’s Academy, a day and boarding school for children.  Students planted the donated seeds in an on-campus greenhouse to enhance the school’s monarch habitats with a sustainable source of milkweed, a plant crucial for the butterflies.

Employees from CEMEX’s Balcones Quarry in New Braunfels, Texas, hosted six Quarry Day educational events in April, guiding 650 elementary and high school students through the largest quarry in the U.S., and teaching them how the limestone produced at the quarry is essential for buildings and roads used every day.  The tours ended at the quarry’s Wildlife Habitat Center, where students learned about the onsite pollinator garden, prairie restoration project and other CEMEX conservation efforts.

Workers at CEMEX’s Panama City, Fla. Ready Mix facility plant a giant milkweed garden to support CEMEX’s Monarch initiative.

In California, CEMEX employees attended several Earth Day-related events, including Mosquito Awareness Day at Longfellow Elementary School in Compton, where employees with our Southern California Ready Mix operations taught children about the production of concrete.  Close to 300 elementary school students also had the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a ready-mix concrete truck.  Employees from CEMEX’s Lytle Creek Quarry attended the City of Rialto’s Earth to Table event and shared with children how aggregates from the quarry are critical components of the roads trucks use daily to get food and other items to their tables.

“We are part of the communities where we live and operate, and we care about our neighbors,” said Jerae Carlson, CEMEX USA’s Vice President of Sustainability and Public Affairs.“These events provide great opportunities to engage with them on a common priority, our environment.”

CEMEX has repeatedly received awards for its efforts in sustainability, including the Portland Cement Association’s 2018 Energy and Environment Award for Land Stewardship for the CEMEX Kosmos Cement Plant in Louisville, Ky.  Last year, 10 CEMEX USA facilities received Conservation Certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council for demonstrating excellence in wildlife habitat enhancement and restoration, as well as conservation education.
