CEMEX Key in Development of Tallest Tower in San Francisco - CEMEX Key in Development of Tallest Tower in San Francisco - CEMEX USA

CEMEX Key in Development of Tallest Tower in San Francisco

Houston, Texas - October 9, 2018

  • New 61-Story Salesforce Tower Named as Finalist for 2018 edition of CEMEX Building Award

San Francisco’s tallest building, the 61-story Salesforce Tower, is now open, and CEMEX has played a key role in the project since day one by helping create the foundation, then supporting construction of the new addition to the city’s iconic skyline.

The 1.4 million square-foot (about 130,000 square meters) building was just named as a finalist for the 2018 edition of the CEMEX Building Award. The skyscraper stands 1,070 feet (about 325 meters), and it was designed to meet San Francisco’s high demand for residential and office space. The lofty height makes Salesforce Tower the second tallest building west of the Mississippi River.

Over the scope of the massive project, CEMEX provided approximately 110,000 cubic yards (about 84,000 cubic meters) of ready-mix concrete, including 7,300 cubic yards (5,500 cubic meters) that were part of the second-largest mat pour in San Francisco’s history. More than 130 ready-mix concrete trucks from CEMEX’s plants in the San Francisco region performed the 18-hour pour, supplying nearly two-thirds of the approximately 12,000 cubic yards of concrete required for the job.

More ready-mix concrete from CEMEX was needed for the core walls in the interior of the structure, which are 4-feet thick at the base.

“Our customers are at the center of everything we do, and Salesforce Tower exemplifies our commitment to providing top quality service and products for industry-leading projects,” said Ignacio Madridejos, President of CEMEX USA. “We are proud to contribute to the evolution of the nation’s skylines and partner with some of the most renowned architects, developers, and suppliers in the world. These buildings need strong foundations, and those foundations start with CEMEX.”

“Working on Salesforce Tower has been a great source of pride for our Bay Area employees,” added Eric Wittmann, West Region President. “Our sales staff, technical teams and drivers, helped create a legacy for the Bay Area to enjoy for generations.”

Sustainability and environmental performance were two central themes of the Salesforce Tower project, which connects to the new transit hub that links eight Bay Area counties through 11 transit systems. Developers also included state-of-the-art amenities with low environmental impact for consideration for LEED Platinum status. Design features include recycled water and rainwater use, incorporating natural daylight into the design, building with recycled material where possible, innovative power-saving features and 100 percent natural air on all floors.
