CEMEX USA team members showcased their commitment to sustainability, land stewardship and the communities in which they operate by planting trees, building pollinator gardens and hosting community events in celebration of Earth Day 2017.

I’m proud of our team members across the U.S. for taking the opportunity this Earth Day to continue building a better future for their communities and our planet,” CEMEX USA President Ignacio Madridejos said.

The Lyons Cement Plant in Colorado, which was recognized by the Portland Cement Association in 2016 with an Energy and Environment Award for Land Stewardship, celebrated Earth Day by planting Austrian pine trees and funding the AQTreks program at three local schools. AQTreks provides students with air-pollution monitors so they can analyze air quality and learn more about the environmental sciences.

At the Victorville Cement Plant in California, one of CEMEX’s 18 Wildlife Habitat Council-certified sites in North America, team members planted pollinator-friendly bushes and nectar plants at their river and quarry facilities to create butterfly habitats.

Volunteers at the Knoxville Cement Plant spent the day refurbishing their existing pollinator garden, which was initially created when CEMEX joined the Monarch Partnership with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Wildlife Habitat Council.

Team members at the Demopolis and Clinchfield cement plants marked Earth Day by donating CEMEX conservation books to local schools, and the Houston Corporate Office collected sneakers for the Nike recycling program.

The Florida aggregates group also got in on the action, hosting their 10th Annual Earth Day Celebration at the Center Hill Mine. More than 1,000 people were on hand to enjoy educational booths, tree-plantings, mine tours, a fossil dig and other family-friendly activities.

In the ready-mix concrete division, teams across the Florida, Mid-South, Texas and West regions planted trees, donated books and volunteered for environmental causes. The Ready Mix USA team in Birmingham, Alabama, spent the day at the Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, sprucing up an existing pollinator garden with new plants and bushes. In addition, the Russellville, Tuscumbia, Trinity, Chattanooga River, Chattanooga Jersey Pike, Greenville, Boone’s Creek, Kingsport, Old River and Prescott Valley ready-mix plants were among the many other CEMEX teams that joined the Earth Day effort by planting their own trees and pollinator gardens on company property.
