CEMEX USA Aggregates Supply Massive South Florida Warehouse Project

Houston, Texas - August 8, 2018

CEMEX USA today announced the company is supplying nearly 300,000 tons of aggregates for the new Carrie Meek Warehouse/Nebula complex near Miami, in part of its work that is supporting growth in South Florida.

The nearly 900,000 square-foot complex, located in Opa-Locka, Fla., is expected to open by late 2018, housing an online retailer. CEMEX crews are supplying 80,000 tons of limerock base, 50,000 tons of fill screenings as well as 50,000 tons of ASTM 57 and ASTM 4 rock combined for the project. In addition, 100,000 tons of crushed concrete will be used to meet specifications.  Crews have worked five to six days per week to supply the project, using aggregates from CEMEX’s FEC Quarry. Recycled concrete was used as part of the pad fill.

“CEMEX’s extensive network in Florida with 13 quarries, 2 cement plants and more than 80 ready-mix facilities can provide all the resources to satisfy the specific needs of our customers,” said Kirk Light, CEMEX USA Regional President—Florida Region. “CEMEX has decades of experience in Florida, contributing to skyscrapers, highways, even theme parks. FEC quarry is uniquely capable of handling large jobs like the Carrie Meek complex not only in the Miami area, but also across the state.”

FEC Quarry, established in 1974, is CEMEX’s second largest aggregate-producing operation in the United States, and the US Geological Survey recently ranked it as fourth in the nation in production volume among crushed stone quarries.

FEC produces seven different nominal sizes of aggregate and five different types of manufactured screenings, making it ideal for large projects like the Carrie Meek Warehouse. Different aggregate blends can be created with FEC’s automated system, meeting the unique project specifications of each customer. An automated operation for the loading and ticketing process helps drivers efficiently collect the aggregates they need, and the quarry’s link to rail lines enables product to be shipped across the state.

The facility received the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) Environmental Excellence Gold Award in 2017 and earlier this year, the 2018 NSSGA Platinum Award for Community Relations.
