CEMEX USA’s dedication to safety highlighted on World Day for Safety & Health at Work
April 29, 2019
CEMEX USA continued its longstanding and award-winning commitment to safety this weekend, by celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work, emphasizing its dedication to the health and safety of its employees and communities while working toward Zero4Life, the company’s ultimate goal of achieving zero recordable injuries and job-related illnesses.
CEMEX USA recently earned twelve 2018 Global CEMEX Health & Safety Awards in recognition of its efforts. For cement, CEMEX USA’s Victorville, Calif., and Clinchfield, Ga., plants were awarded for safety performance and contractor management. Aggregates Arizona and Florida Sand Division earned awards in aggregates, while Southern Arizona/Yuma received recognition for safety in ready-mix. Florida Block Manufacturing, Sacramento/Reno Ready-Mix, Southern Arizona Ready-Mix and CEMEX USA’s West Region, were all recognized for their contributions to Zero4Life. National initiatives promoting Financial and Occupational Health also received awards.
“Safety is our top priority at CEMEX, and we strive to live that core value every day at all our operations,” said CEMEX USA President Ignacio Madridejos. “Safety is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage our colleagues to identify opportunities to improve safety whenever possible, share best practices and look out for one another to make Zero4Life possible.”
Additionally, CEMEX USA cement plants in Victorville, Calif., Clinchfield, Ga., and Demopolis, Ala., each received recognition earlier this month from the Portland Cement Association (PCA), earning the 2019 PCA Chairman’s Safety Performance Award for their outstanding safety achievements. The company was also recognized by the National Ready-Mixed Concrete Association with the 2019 NRMCA Concrete Cares Award.
CEMEX USA’s commitment to safety has extended into communities with initiatives promoting safety for cyclists and pedestrians. The company launched Safer Roads Together in 2017 and has hosted more than 10 events across the U.S. promoting road safety for cyclists. Employees hosted the latest event Sunday at the starting line of the Fiesta Wildflower Ride in San Antonio, Texas, a bike ride benefitting a local non-profit organization. CEMEX volunteers distributed suggested safety guidelines to ride participants, offering each rider the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a cement tanker truck to gain a unique perspective on road safety. The event coincided with World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Since the start of 2019, CEMEX USA has spread the message of Safer Roads Together with events in Los Angeles, Calif., Mesa, Ariz., Miami and Naples, Fla.
CEMEX USA has also launched a second safety awareness campaign called Look Twice, specifically targeting pedestrians and drivers. The initiative, which is currently underway in seven major U.S. metropolitan areas, urges pedestrians and drivers to look twice before taking any action on the road. Under the program, select mixer trucks will be on the streets in Atlanta, Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, San Francisco and Los Angeles with brightly-painted yellow drums encouraging additional safety awareness.
In addition to the commitment to safety, CEMEX USA has continued to promote better health, developing programs such as Fit 4 Life and Know Your Numbers. The initiatives motivate employees to get active, eat healthy and get to know their relevant health numbers like blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose. CEMEX USA
also offers customized online and phone health coaching, year-round activity challenges and chronic disease management, along with financial planning assistance for employees at no cost. The company holds an annual Health Week to promote healthy lifestyles.
“Health and Safety are intertwined, and at CEMEX, we continue to work to promote both,” said CEMEX USA Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Communications Guillermo Martinez. “We develop initiatives designed to keep our employees engaged, providing them access to information that can enhance their lives at work and at home.”
