CEMEX USA’s Fairborn Cement Plant Recognized for Energy Conservation Efforts - CEMEX USA’s Fairborn Cement Plant Recognized for Energy Conservation Efforts - CEMEX USA

CEMEX USA’s Fairborn Cement Plant Recognized for Energy Conservation Efforts

Houston, Texas - September 15, 2011

The CEMEX USA cement plant in Fairborn, Ohio decreased electric power consumption used for compressed air by more than half, earning the company a $226,000 rebate from Dayton Power & Light (DP&L). The decrease in electricity consumption also reduces the amount of CO2emitted into the atmosphere annually by more than 1,475 metric tons.

CEMEX USA’s rebate is the largest that DP&L has paid to date as part of its energy efficiency programs offered to customers to meet Ohio’s energy efficiency targets to reduce electricity consumption by 22 percent by the end of 2025.

CEMEX’s Fairborn plant replaced a compressed air system that consisted of five compressors of varying horsepower operating 24 hours a day and consuming more than a projected 4.48 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually. Five new, more efficient 200-horsepower units now serve the plant’s compressed air needs on significantly less electricity (2.04 million kWh annually for an expected savings of more than 2.44 million kWh each year).

“As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, CEMEX USA’s Fairborn plant has achieved record-breaking success with its energy conservation efforts,” said Karl Watson, Jr., President of CEMEX USA. “Over the past several years, we have allocated significant time and resources to find inventive solutions for reducing our energy consumption and the achievements at our Fairborn plant are a result of these tremendous efforts.”

In 2010, the company’s commitment to energy management translated into an investment of $16.2 million in projects to increase operational energy efficiency. CEMEX USA reduced its total primary energy consumption in 2010 equal to a reduction of 10,968 metric tons of CO2emissions. The amount of energy saved is equivalent to providing electricity to 1,521 American homes for a year.
