CEMEX USA Supplies Concrete for Los Angeles’ Long-Awaited Purple Line Extension

Los Angeles, one of the nation’s most sprawling and populous cities, is known for many things—one of which is traffic. CEMEX USA is playing a key role in alleviating that issue by supplying concrete for Phase 1 of the long-awaited Metro Purple Line Extension, which will eventually connect West Los Angeles to the region’s growing rail network and provide a high-speed, reliable way for people to travel to and from popular areas like Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood.

Phase 1, which began in 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2023, includes a 3.9-mile section of twin-rail subway and three underground stations in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills: Wilshire/LaBrea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega.

CEMEX will supply at least 333,000 cubic yards of concrete for Phase 1, primarily sourced out of the Hollywood Ready-Mix Plant.

"This is the kind of project that will improve transportation and mobility for generations of Los Angeles residents, and CEMEX has the resources and experience to help make it a reality. We are proud to be a part of building a better future for one of the nation's greatest cities through the extension of the Metro Purple Line,” said Ignacio Madridejos, CEMEX USA President.

Mike Aparicio, Executive Vice President of Skanska, which is leading the design-build joint venture constructing the project, said CEMEX was selected for this job because of its reputation, safety record and unique capabilities.

“CEMEX has a strong portfolio, including work on the LA Metro the Gold Line expansion 10 years ago, which was a successful project. So when the Purple Line project came up, we knew the experience and skill CEMEX brought to the table,” Aparicio said.

Working on a large-scale project in a densely populated area over such a long period of time presents its challenges, but the city has been researching, planning and analyzing data for the project since 2007 with the goal of completing construction with the least possible impact on area residents.

“The Purple Line Extension will make Los Angeles a better place to live and work, and it’s an honor to be a part of that. Special thanks to Senior Account Manager Ron Taber for developing our relationship with Skanska and making this project a reality for CEMEX,” said Eric Wittmann, CEMEX USA West Regional President.
