San Francisco High-Rise Wins Coveted CEMEX Building Award - San Francisco High-Rise Wins Coveted CEMEX Building Award - CEMEX USA
Houston, Texas - November 11, 2016
Webcor Builders took home one of the top honors at the International Edition of the 25th Annual CEMEX Building Award Thursday for its work on The Lumina, a luxury residential high-rise project that is now part of the skyline of downtown San Francisco.
Lumina, a four-building complex consisting of a 43-story tower and a 38-story tower connected by two nine-story mid-rises, won first place in the residential housing category at the 2016 CEMEX Building Award ceremony in Mexico City. The entire complex stands on a footprint of just 75,000 square feet.
“I’m extremely proud of what our Bay Area team accomplished at Lumina. This highlights how our project team and drivers can work together with our clients to solve several challenges – doing it all injury-free,” said Eric Wittmann, Regional President for the West Region at CEMEX USA. “The result is a stunning set of buildings that is transforming one of the world’s most remarkable cities.”
“This was the largest concrete job we’d done at the time,” said James Shimamoto, Webcor Project Manager. “I’ve never seen four buildings go up in a two-block area that were run by four separate people. So, that was definitely a challenge for CEMEX and Webcor Builders, and I think we definitely mastered that challenge.”
“CEMEX USA is proud to partner with Webcor on projects like Lumina, which showcase the very best our industry has to offer,” CEMEX USA President Ignacio Madridejos said. “We look forward to building a better future with Webcor in the Bay Area for many years to come.”
More than 60 projects were entered in the International Edition of the CEMEX Building Award, including buildings constructed in 20 different countries: Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Spain, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The first CEMEX Building Award ceremony was held in 1991 and the recognition has become one of the most prestigious construction awards in the last 25 years.
A panel of judges comprised of 15 representatives from the architectural and building industry, scholars, and private organizations from 17 countries evaluated the projects submitted. The panel selected the winning works for their construction process, structural and architectural solutions, integral sustainability, and value creation for users and communities.
