Energy Management - CEMEX USA

Energy Management

CEMEX understands the importance of sustainable development and continually seeks ways to reduce the environmental footprint of its operations. Throughout our history, we have focused on improving the environment and reducing energy consumption.

The CEMEX sustainable operation strategy is based on increasing the use of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in our operations, replacing traditional fuels with carbon neutral alternatives, reducing clinker content in cement, and exploring new carbon-reduction options. CEMEX set a goal of reducing carbon emissions by 25% per ton of cement by 2015 (from a 1990 baseline) and reducing NOx emissions by 15% by 2015 from 2005 levels. CEMEX already achieved significant progress in reducing its specific carbon emissions by 20.5% and NOx emissions by 19% in 2010.

CEMEX USA and ENERGY STAR®

With the aim of achieving its goals in energy management and sustainability, CEMEX USA created an energy management program based on principles of the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR® program in 2007. Since the program’s launch, several of CEMEX USA’s operations have received the prestigious ENERGY STAR certification, which represents their standing among the top 25% of cement plants with regards to energy performance. CEMEX’s recognition demonstrates the success of several projects that have increased energy efficiency, such as investing in energy conservation and monitoring technologies, conducting energy audits to reduce unnecessary power usage, and installing area power metering equipment to better analyze consumption.

The following CEMEX cement manufacturing plants have received ENERGY STAR certifications:

  • Clinchfield (2007- 2013)
  • Louisville (2007- 2011)
  • Miami (2011, 2012, 2013)
  • Brooksville South (2012, 2013)
  • Fairborn (2012, 2013)
  • Victorville (2012, 2013)
  • Demopolis (2009, 2010, 2011)
  • Balcones (2011)
  • Knoxville (2008)

In 2019, CEMEX USA also received the EPA’s highest honor, the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award, which recognizes partners for their commitment to successfully managing energy use and promoting ENERGY STAR goals within their own organizations.

Wind Energy

In 2012, CEMEX USA commissioned its first U.S.-based wind turbines at its quarry facility in Madison, Calif., in collaboration with Foundation Windpower, demonstrating a commitment to reducing CO2 emissions through the use of renewable energy. The success of the project led to the construction of four additional wind turbines at CEMEX Victorville in 2013, an effort that solidifies CEMEX’s role as leader on the industry’s path towards a more sustainable future.
